Cricket Reference

Cricket Reference is a site dedicated to the sabermetric type development of empirical cricket statistics. It is aimed at the creation of a player rating system for Test Cricket, One Day International (ODI) cricket, and the premier T20 cricket tournament, the Indian Premier League. Historically, the evaluation of a cricket player's career statistics has been limited to focusing on the player's batting or bowling average, with other metrics like batting strike rates and bowling economy rates being considered in isolation. For the first time, a player performance rating system that employs advanced statistical methods is developed here that helps provide a holistic view of a player's career numbers. It takes into account all the statistics available for a particular position and rolls them up to a single player performance rating number.

Player Rating System

The player rating system employed here is based on a weighted average model, where different weights are given to each of the player's measured statistic. The metrics tracked for the different player ratings are shown in the table below.

The Geometric Mean of all of these metrics, weighted by their relative importance for the position, contribute towards a player's final performance rating number. The league average for all forms of cricket is set at a normalized scale of 100. A player whose rating is above 100 means that he was a better than average performer and similarly if the rating is below 100, it means that he was below average.

Rating Metrics
Test Batsman Rating (TestBatR) Batting average, Runs per innings, No. of innings per 100, No. of innings per 50
